About Us
Diners in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts welcomed us to Springfield as Carmela Ristorante. Our first location in the city's South End, which traditionally was the part of town where the Italian community came to dine, play and pray.
We expanded into new space in the Hall of Fame in 2006, changed our name to Pazzo Ristorante, and quickly became a destination for local residents and businesses as well as travelers making their way north and south, east and west.

Pazzo makes debut at Hall of Fame

SPRINGFIELD Springfield's newest restaurant, Pazzo, is many things. It's an expansion and improvement on the former Carmela's restaurant, it's an investment in downtown Springfield's riverfront, it's an addition to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame complex, and it's an escape for local residents.
Prior to its official grand opening last week, Reminder Publications had a tour of the new facility and met up with two of Pazzo's three owners, Steve Degliuomini and Sal Mannino, who is also the executive chef. The third owner, Paul Astuto, is also Degliuomini's nephew.
Mannino explained that Pazzo is a fun name, derived from the Italian word for "crazy." And the menu is as authentically Italian as the name.
While not a complete departure from what he offered at Carmela's, Mannino pointed out that there will now be a children's menu. And, if customers can't find exactly what they want on the menu, which has a Sicilian-inspired emphasis, but which offers dishes representing all the regions of Italy, they can talk to Mannino himself. He said he can make any special order, and often did at Carmela's.
"I care for my customers," Mannino explained. "If you take our suggestion [on what to order], you're going to be satisfied." Degliuomini explained that there were a couple of drawbacks to the Carmela's location on Main Street in Springfield's South End.
Among the not-so-appealing features were the only 18 parking spots for the popular restaurant, and a 24-hour business close by with plenty of traffic.
"When the opportunity [to move to the Basketball Hall of Fame] arose, we couldn't turn it down," Degliuomini explained.
In addition to the vast available parking, Degliuomini explained that Pazzo's was able to take Carmela's original bar, but expand it. There is now a banquet room, which already has bookings; large, posh bathrooms; artwork galore; and real Venetian platered walls with warm Meditteranean colors.
Lisa Cignoli of Rosewood Consulting said she introduced Carmela's owners to the Springfield Riverfront Development Corporation and the Andy Crystal, property manager for the Hall of Fame. From there, she said, it was clear sailing.
Mannino and Degliuomini said last Thursday that they were very excited about Monday's grand opening. At that time, there was still work going on in the new space. Two giant mirrors were being hung on the back wall, reflecting the natural light that pours in through the front windows. Art work, featuring Degliuomini's pride and joy a signed collage of albums and photos from members of The Rat Pack such as Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., and others was being hung. The bar and open stainless steel kitchen were being assembled. And old customers and employees excited to get started in their new space dropped in.
The restaurant will officially open to the public March 29.
Degliuomini reflected that, while "new and improved," so to speak, Pazzo maintains the same ambience and warmth for which Carmela's was known.
Cignoli said about 50 new jobs were created with the new restaurant, and Degliuomini added that 99 percent of Carmela's staff transferred to Pazzo. Cignoli also pointed out that the owners made sure to hire almost all local vendors for everything from builders, electricians, painters, glass installers, heating and air conditioning, plumbing, and more.
Pazzo celebrated their ribbon cutting Monday at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield. Kitchen hours beginning March 29 will be 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day, and the bar will be open until 2 a.m.

Hall adds new restaurant

A new restaurant at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame will open by the end of the month, almost filling the retail space at the hoop shrine.
Pazzo RIstorante is the new name for the former Carmela's Restaurant. The partners in the eatery moved from a location on Main Street in the South End section of Springfield to a space inside the new Basketball Hall of Fame building.
The retail space in the Hall includes a Reebok store, a fast-ffod court. Max's Tavern and a Cold Stone Creamery store. Hall President John Doleva said the new tenant leaves just 3,500 square feet of empty retail space remaining inside the Hall.
Partner Paul Astuto said he believes the two sit-down restaurants in the Hall will complement each other rather than compete. Pazzo will feature Sicilian-based Italian cuisine.
Construction is under way at the restaurant site, which is in the northeast corner of the Hall of Fame building, next to Cold Stone Creamery. The restaurant will seat 180 in the main dining room, about 50 in a bar area and 40 in a dining room for private gatherings or events.
"Pazzo" means crazy in Italian.
"We wanted something short, something easy to remembe," said partner Steve Deglivomini.
The third partner in the restaurant is Sal Mannino. The group also operates Distil, a bar downtown, and plans to reopen another restaurantm formerly known as Caffeine's, under the name Patron late this year or early in 2007.
"Springfield need to improve its image, we're part of that," Astuto said.
He said his group was attracted to Springfield because there was an apportunity to open high-end restaurants here with lower rents than in some other areas.
"We did feel when we came in there was a need for a certain kind of fine dining," he said.
The group opened Carmela's two years ago, then decided to move to the higher-profile location in the Basketball Hall of Fame last year. Carmela's closed at the end of January.
Doleva said he believes the final space inside the Hall of Fame will go quickly as plans continue for riverfront developments including a health and finess complex just north of the Hall.
The addition of a busy restaurant in the facility will add to the exposure the Hall of Fame gets. "It gets people to go to the Hall of Fame," Doleva said.

Springfield answers the call to refresh

It's nice to be reassured that there's nothing wrong with the Pioneer Valley's auditory skills.
We ca still hear an ice cube hitting the bottom of a glass from five miles away.
That was proved once again last Monday evening, when Pazzo Ristorante, the new incarnation of the former Carmela Ristorante in the South End, held its grand opening in its upsacale space in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
More than 400 of the area's glitterati showed up to slake their collective thirst and sample an array of hors d'oeuvres.
Based on early returns, folks are finding their way back for lunch and dinner.
Pazzo joins Max's Tavern to make the Basketball Hall of Fame a prime new dining location in Springfield, and Pizzeria Uno is just across the parking lot from said repository of fame.
In all of the talk about the need for economic development and job creation in the city, it's easy to overlook the impact of those restaurants and the money they bring into Ye Olde Springfield in purchases, consumer spending and in payrolls.
Pazzo's for example, will employ about 50 people, many of whom will transfer from the old Carmela's location on Main Street.
The partners in that venture also opened Distil, a lounge on Worthington Street at the site of the former All That Jazz and plan to open another restaurant, Patron, at the site of the former Caffeine's on Worthington Street.
More important, perhaps, is the positive spin they give to Springfield.
Paul Astuto, one of the partners in Pazzo, was encouraged by the turnout of Monday's event, which was three days before the restaurant's official opening. He thinks Pazzo and Max's Tavern will help each other.
"I believe competition breeds success," he said. "It gives people another option for reservations, another bar, another focal point. I can see that in just the first few days."
Astuto said that although his group is optimistic about Springfield, dealing with its current properties is a "full-time job." In other words, they'll complete their projects already under way before considering any new ventures.
He said they have been pleased with the reception of Distil and the mix of customers in their 40s, 50s and 60s.
"There's a tremendous demand there for private parties," he said.
He also thinks that Patron, offering a bistro type menu of American fusion dishes, will further "change the fabric of that neighborhood."
A lot of what his group is doing is addressing the image of Springfield.
"We need people to have a little courage and to believe in themselves," Astuto said. "And we need the political community to speak out and act."

Basketball Hall of Fame
General Conditions
We require a $250.00 non-refundable deposit upon booking your event.
The deposit will be credited towards your final bill.
Our private room is available for special events seven days a week.
For cocktail parties our private room is available Sunday through Thursday evenings.
Friday and Saturday evening events may be scheduled at 5:00pm or 8:30pm only.
We require a guaranteed number of guests seven days before your event.
If the attendance falls below the minimum guarantee, the customer will be charged for
the guaranteed number of guests. At this time an additional deposit is required and
menu choices must be finalized for the event.
Sunday through Thursday requires an $800.00 room minimum
not including tax and gratuities.
Friday and Saturday requires a $1300.00 room minimum
not including tax and gratuities.
Luncheons Monday through Saturday require a $400.00 room minimum
not including tax and gratuities.
Dinner parties are $34 per person for a four course meal, $44 per person for a five
course meal or $54 per person for a five course meal.
Five course dinner selections will only be available on Friday and
Saturday evening events.
Luncheon parties are $18 for a two course meal or $24 for a three course meal.
Our prices do not include an 18% gratuity charge and Massachusetts tax.
Wine, alcoholic drinks and beverages upon consumption.
